June 6, 2011, Dare County Board of Commissioners signed a proclamation recognizing the historical and cultural significance of Soaring 100 and designating October as Soaring Heritage Month. The proclamation summarized the Wrights’ work on the Outer Banks, aviation “firsts” and continuing legacy, the partnership of aviation organizations to present the centennial, that soaring is the most environmentally friendly form of aviation, and the collaboration of state and national parks. All Dare County citizens are encouraged to learn about their aviation heritage and to adopt the lessons of courage, “dauntless resolution and unquerable faith” of the Wright brothers to continue the development and strengthening of the community.
